Lifeguard Training

Interested in a great summer job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Training options feature two core courses—Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Lifeguarding (available in a blended learning format). Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course.

BLENDED LEARNING CLASS

In addition to the pool side work the student will complete, the class also includes online coursework that must be completed by the student.

Lifeguard Instructor Training

There must be a minimum of 6 participants registered one week before the class begins or it will be canceled.

IMPORTANT: All registration fees are non-refundable and there is a $44 fee which goes directly to the American Red Cross.

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.

PREREQUISITES

1. Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
3. Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report.
4. Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course which consist of the following:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructors Manual (print).
  • Lifeguarding course presentation and/or DVD.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual (print or digital).

The first portion of the class will be independent and online, prior to the in-person sessions. Once I sign you up for the class, you will receive an email from the Red Cross with instructions on how to begin the online learning module.

There will be three in-person sessions. You must complete the online module and pass its exam (80% or better, two attempts) in order to take the in-person portion.

The course fee is $200 for new lifeguards, and $60 for a recertification. This is due by the last in-person class, by cash, check, or Venmo.

Each in-person session runs about 4-7 hours each day, so come prepared with a lunch/water bottle/etc. Here are the tentative in-person dates and times:
