Our 5 Level Progression

Based on a logical, five-level progression that helps swimmers about 4+ years old and adults develop their water safety, survival, and swimming skills. It is designed to give participants a positive learning experience.

Level 1

4 years and under

The tadpole group lesson is for children that are being introduced to the swimming pool for the first few times. The main focus of this level is to find comfort in the swimming pool. In order for your swimmer to progress to the next level, these tasks must be completed.

  • INDEPENDENT FRONT FLOAT WITH BUBBLES- 3 SEC
  • FLUTTER KICK WITH KNEES SLIGHTLY BENT
  • INDEPENDENT BACK FLOAT- 3 SEC
  • FLUTTER KICK WITH KNEES SLIGHTLY BENT

Level 2

4 years and up

Group FROG is for the beginner swimmer that is familiar with the water. The swimmer will learn the fundamentals of swimming as well as pool safety. At the completion of level one, the swimmer will be able to achieve the following:

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE WITH ARMS AND LEGS EXTENDED AT SURFACE OF WATER, FACE IN WATER WITH EARS BETWEEN ARMS AND BLOWING BUBBLES - 5 SEC
  • FLUTTER KICK WITH LEGS EXTENDED, KICK FROM HIPS
  • DOLPHIN KICK INITIATED FROM HIPS
  • BREASTSTROKE KICK - FEET TURNED OUT
  • ALTERNATING ARMS - LONG ARMS WITH RECOVERY OUT OF THE WATER, ARM PULL STAYS CLOSE TO THE BODY
  • SIMULTANEOUS ARMS - SHORT PULL WITH HANDS PULLING NO LOWER THAN THE SHOULDERS
  • BODY IN STREAMLINE WITH ARMS AND LEGS EXTENDED JUST UNDER THE SURFACE OF WATER, HEAD BACK WITH EARS IN WATER LOOKING AT CEILING
  • FLUTTER KICK FROM HIPS WITH KNEES SLIGHTLY BENT ON DOWN STROKE
  • ALTERNATING ARMS- ARMS MOVE AT SAME TIME WITH ONE PULLING AND THE OTHER RECOVERING

Level 3

4 years and up

Group TURTLE is for the swimmer that has completed group FROG or can float unassisted and swim rudimentary freestyle. At the completion of level TURTLE, your swimmer will be able to complete the following:

Front Crawl/Freestyle

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE AND HORIZONTAL TO THE SURFACE
  • STRAIGHT ARM OR SLIGHTLY BENT ELBOW THROUGHOUT ARMSTROKE
  • FLUTTER KICK FROM HIP WITH LEGS EXTENDED AND TOES POINTED
  • STREAMLINE MAINTAINED DURING BREATHING
  • SWIM 15 YD

Backstroke

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE THROUGHOUT STROKE
  • ARMS STRAIGHT AND ALTERNATE THROUGHOUT STROKE
  • LEGS EXTENDED WITH SLIGHT KNEE BEND ON DOWNSTROKE
  • SWIM 15 YD

Breaststroke

  • START AND END IN STREAMLINE
  • BREATHE DURING ARM PULL
  • ARMSTROKE GOES NO LOWER THAN THE CHEST
  • KICK WITH FLEXED FEET, KNEES NO WIDER THAN HIP WIDTH APART WHEN BENT, FEET PUSH BACK AND NOT OUT
  • GLIDE IN STREAMLINE
  • SWIM 15 YD

Butterfly

  • STRAIGHT ARMS THROUGHOUT THE STROKE
  • BREATHE AT ANYTIME DURING ARMSTROKE
  • ARMS RECOVER OVER OR NEAR THE SURFACE OF THE WATER
  • TWO KICKS PER STROKE
  • SWIM 15 YD

Level 4

4 years and up

Group PENGUIN is for the swimmer that has completed group TURTLE. In Group PENGUIN, swimmers will learn to swim freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke and will be introduced to dolphin and breaststroke kick.

Front Crawl/Freestyle

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE AND HORIZONTAL TO THE SURFACE
  • ARM BENT AT ELBOW AND PUSHES ALONG THE SIDE OF BODY DURING THE PULL
  • ARM STRAIGHT OR SLIGHTLY BENT DURING OVER-THE-WATER RECOVERY
  • ARM EXTENDS AND ENTERS WATER ABOVE HEAD
  • KICK STARTS AT HIP, LEGS EXTENDED BUT NOT RIGID
  • BODY ROLL DURING STROKE AND BREATHING
  • HEAD DOWN ON WATER DURING ROTARY BREATHING
  • SWIM 25 YD

Backstroke

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE THROUGHOUT STROKE
  • ARMS STRAIGHT DURING RECOVERY AND BENT UNDERWATER
  • ARMS EXTENDED ABOVE HEAD AND BODY ROLLS WHILE ARM ENTERS WATER
  • LEGS EXTENDED WITH SLIGHT KNEE BEND ON DOWNSTROKE
  • SWIM 25 YD

Breaststroke

  • START AND END IN STREAMLINE
  • BREATHE DURING ARM PULL
  • ARMSTROKE NO WIDER THAN THE SHOULDERS OR LOWER THAN THE CHEST
  • KICK WITH FLEXED FEET, KNEES NO WIDER THAN HIPS FEET PUSH BACK AND NOT OUT
  • SWIM 25 YD

Butterfly

  • ARMS BEND AS THEY PUSH BACKWARD UNDERWATER
  • ARMS EXTENDED OVER THE WATER DURING RECOVERY AND ENTER THE WATER ABOVE THE HEAD
  • TWO KICKS PER STROKE
  • BREATHING AND KICKS OCCUR AT CORRECT TIME
  • SWIM 15 YD

Level 5

4 years and up

SEA OTTER is for the swimmer ready to advance their swimming skills. In the SEA OTTER group, your swimmer will enhance freestyle and backstroke and continue to learn butterfly and breaststroke. In order to advance to the pre-team group, the following must be completed:

Front Crawl/Freestlye

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE AND HORIZONTAL TO THE SURFACE; BODY ROLL IS A FLUID MOTION WITH HEAD, TRUNK, AND LEGS ALIGNED
  • ARM BENT AT ELBOW AND PUSHES ALONG THE SIDE OF BODY DURING THE PULL
  • ARM STRAIGHT OR SLIGHTLY BENT DURING OVER-THE-WATER RECOVERY
  • ARM EXTENDS AND ENTERS WATER ABOVE HEAD
  • KICK STARTS AT HIP, LEGS EXTENDED BUT NOT RIGID, HEELS JUST BREAK THE SURFACE
  • SWIM 50 YD

Backstroke

  • BODY IN STREAMLINE THROUGHOUT STROKE
  • ARMS STRAIGHT DURING RECOVERY AND SLIGHTLY BENT UNDERWATER
  • BODY ROLLS WHILE EXTENDED ARM ENTERS WATER LITTLE FINGER FIRST
  • CONTINUOUS KICKING WITH LEGS EXTENDED AND SLIGHT KNEE BEND ON DOWNSTROKE
  • SWIM 50 YD

Breaststroke

  • START AND END IN STREAMLINE
  • PULL AND BREATHE, KICK, GLIDE SEQUENCE
  • ARMSTROKE NO WIDER THAN THE SHOULDERS OR LOWER THAN THE CHEST
  • KICK WITH FLEXED AND TURNED OUT FEET, KNEES NO WIDER THAN HIPS, FEET PUSH BACK AND NOT OUT
  • SWIM 50 YD

Butterfly

  • ARMS BEND AS THEY PUSH BACKWARD UNDERWATER
  • ARMS EXTENDED OVER THE WATER DURING RECOVERY AND ENTER THE WATER ABOVE THE HEAD
  • TWO KICKS PER STROKE
  • BREATHING AND KICKS OCCUR AT CORRECT TIME
  • SWIM 25 YD
